Three hours is no longer enough
time to see it all via trolley tour
Thursday, June 16,
marked the year’s second “Open Doors Manchester-Art and Cultural Tour,” Featuring 12 participating venues.
“The purpose of the tour,” said
Jessica Kinsey of NH Institute of Art (NHIA), “is to bring easier access to the arts for people who just don’t
know about it or for people who are economically challenged.”
The tour is put together by a
large group of volunteers throughout the community. Organizer Rob Dionne of the Majestic Theatre put his heart
and soul into the event, heading all the committees from pamphlet-making to navigation to transporting the
trolleys up from Boston.
Volunteers put the word out to
different venues, which offered a variety of exhibits. Offerings ranged from the LEGO exhibit at the SEE Science
Center to the Senior Exhibit at the NHIA in Fuller Hall.
Jeanne Melnick, mother of an
incoming NHIA student, said she was really impressed to see the students’ work and get a flavor of the arts.
Some people were just on the trolley
for the ride, which was full of fun. The trolleys came equipped with a bell and marc, one of the drivers, animated
“The Wheels on the Bus” song with swishing wipers.
Langer Place offered three levels of
Open Doors exhibits. There were about 20 different exhibits in this one venue (including kickboxing). Ed Reinish
of Reinish Cabinetry displayed pictures of furniture that he crafted. Jeff Dachowski of Dachowski Photography
showed his work. Then there was the 23-year-old phenomenon James Chase, a juried
member of the Manchester Artists Association and the Artist of the Month of June at Déjà vu Arts. He is a visual
artist who creates intriguing pieces of work he calls dark art.
The first-ever Open Doors had only
seven venues volunteering; they are now capping off at 12. Because it’s not possible to view all the venues in a
three-hour period, there are four Open Doors tours from April through November. If you make it to three venues per
tour, you should be able to view all the art offered in Manchester
The Next Open Doors tour is Thursday,
Sept. 22. For more information, contact Robert Dionne at 669-7469 or send him an e-mail at Opendoorsmnchstr@aol.com
